Environmental Innovation

Shir Hadash’s Center for Jewish Life is set to become Israel’s first truly ‘Green’ Synagogue/Community Center.  Given Jerusalem’s ability to influence the world, we believe this action will inspire the subsequent adoption of innovative green building standards for Synagogues and Jewish Communal buildings throughout the world.

Specific environmental innovations being explored include:

Solar energy production via the signature domes on top of the roof, as well as the numerous floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the building.

cutting edge technology that enables energy to be generated through dancing — yes, dancing (see below video) – is being explored for the ‘Simcha’ hall for use during celebratory events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, and communal parties.

Wind produced energy is also under consideration.

Rainwater will be collected via the roof and conserved for use year round, and ‘grey water’ will be utilized, thus minimizing the need for outside water sources.

Sustainable landscaping, natural lighting, energy efficient appliances, environmentally friendly cleaning products, extensive recycling and a kitchen policy sensitive to environmental concerns will all be utilized.

Ultimately, our objective is not just to build a building, but to build a building that is just.
